No. 93 – 1919

I wasn’t expecting a complex flavor profile from 1919 and as such, I wavered hard between trying to figure out if this is top tier or an above average root beer. It is very rich and creamy but not overtly sweet. Sometimes there’s little balance between a root beer that’s very creamy and also overtly sweet. Also, vanilla, caramel, and wintergreen jockey for position in taste. This is where the complex profile comes in. My tastebuds were assaulted, in a good way, by this three prong attack. And in the aftertaste, a slight wintergreen mixed with the sweet vanilla danced on my tongue. The wintergreen did get a little more pronounced as I continued the bottle but not in an overly heavy way. This is made in Minnesota, yet another win for the Midwest for root beers, and after a little thought, slides into top tier status. For some, the wintergreen may be a little too much, but for me it walked the delicate balance between not enough and too much.
