The very last root beer review of 2024 was hand delivered all the way from the great state of Ohio by the one and only David Chovan. He is a fellow root beer fanatic & is always on the search for them like I am. He talked up Frostop for several months before he brought it to me, so it was already at an impossibly high bar. And yet it easily surpassed that bar with a lot of room to spare. What I like most about Frostop is that it’s incredibly complex. There is a lot of flavors going on and it all meshes well. I took a whiff before drinking and all I could smell was wintergreen. However, as I continued to drink it, the wintergreen took a backseat to everything else. It’s smooth, it’s creamy, and it has an incredibly good spicy bite. You can taste caramel and vanilla and there’s a good amount of spices that linger in the aftertaste. The flavor also stays on the tongue long after you swallow. I love it and it’s definitely a top tier root beer. I recommend this one if you can find it. For most, it’s probably going to be online but maybe you can get lucky and find them somewhere out there. And if you’re really lucky, maybe you can go to the dozen remaining Frostop drive-ins left in the country. There’s a few in the very Deep South (Louisiana, Mississippi), some scattered out west, and a couple in the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana). Like many drive-in restaurants, its hey-day was in the 1960s with many locations in the Midwest and Deep South. I’d love to make a special trip one of these days to scope it out. What’s on deck for 2025? You’ll find out soon enough!
