No. 125 – Apothecary

Interesting enough, Apothecary Root Beer (and the overall brand itself) has an almost 90 year history. The founder & patriarch of the family opened an apothecary in Ohio in 1937 & he worked on medicinal prescriptions & soda formulas. If this root beer has the same taste now as it did back then (and there’s nothing to tell me otherwise), then I can truly believe it. The flavor does harken back to a simpler time & points back to where root beer and sodas like Coca Cola originated. Apothecary is a very light tasting root beer. Everything in the bottle is very subtle. Up front, the carbonation is almost nonexistent. The body is creamy and not at all sweet. It’s only until you get to the aftertaste and you get a nice herbal bite that finally resembles root beer. It doesn’t overwhelm you or get up all in your face but it is there & I definitely enjoyed it. The label is also definitely old school and totally fits the aesthetic. Overall, I didn’t love it but I enjoyed it. For me, I have too many other root beers that I have found that stand head and shoulders above this one but if someone ever handed me a bottle I wouldn’t say no to the offer. And on the other side, it’s way better than just an average root beer as well. It is a drink deserving to be place in the above average echelon & for that the brand should be proud of such a good product. The brand does carry a couple other sodas (black cherry & cream soda) that I’m sure bound to be good but since I am not a fan of those flavors I will not give either a shot. An interesting history for an interesting drink, that’s rare!
