No. 130 – Mason’s

I don’t have the accurate statistics right in front of me but I feel that the vast majority of the root beers I have tried are firmly within the average category. I’d say around 50%, perhaps a bit more. 25% of the remaining are either top tier and above average & the remaining 25% are below average (a pretty small category) and don’t waste your time & money. By and large if you were to blindfold yourself & pick a root beer, it likely would be average & Mason’s would be one of the drinks.

I like the old school label of Mason’s. It draws you in with the vibe & root beer barrel. I’m totally a sucker for nostalgia. But a label can only do so much in the heavy lifting for the drink. The taste is what matters most. And well, it is totally average. There’s very little carbonation & it’s sweeter than what I’d like. It doesn’t have the rooty bite I normally look for & the aftertaste is ever so slightly fruity. I didn’t hate it but I’m not going to go out of my way for it again. Lucky for me, the only place I’ve seen it on shelves is a hardware store in Ohio & I’ve exhausted all other options the store currently carries for root beer.
